Thank you for a very entertaining cryptic. 4A Unsure about MO = "work" 5D Unsure about DATE as a synonym for "excursion" 13D AD = "for" is something that I've never seen in a cryptic; it isn't listed in any of my reference works, including Chambers. 14D RI = "army"; again, something I've never seen before and I can't find it in any of my reference works.

        Hi again!
        Thanks for the comments.
I’ve seen MO for work in a published crossword before, I think it was a Quick Cryptic from the Times.
        Noted about date/ excursion.
I’ll double check AD- it definitely means ‘for’ in borrowed phrases from Latin, eg ‘ad hod’ and ‘as hominem’.
I’d thought that RI stands for Royal Infantry. I checked it just now online, and found a comment on a crossword blog where someone says “ RI=Royal infantry is something I’ve known since my youth, but it seems to have disappeared from the dictionaries”. Maybe I’ll stop using it now.

Thanks for the reply. I've seen MO as an abbreviation for "modus operandi" - i.e. way of working. I'm a Daily Telegraph fan; I don't usually stray into the wild outlands of "The Times" 😁
