    PARSING:
1A: Definition is “Galvaniser”, ZINC is found from the capitals (first letters) of Zimbabwe, In Nifty Container
2D: Double definition, “smooth out” means to IRON, which is a major component in steel
3D: Definition is “Police officer” (British slang). Oddly refers to taking the odd numbered letters of “chomps pie”- giving COPPE, and placing this before the start (first letter) of RIOT (R) gives COPPER
4D: Definition is “direct”, confusing is an anagram indicator for DEAL, which gives LEAD
5A: Definition is “its a gas!”, everything but ROXY’s head (first letter) gives OXY, plus the backside (latter half) of IMOGEN (GEN) gives OXYGEN
6A: Definition is “Beans store”, and a well known character from a comic book is TINTIN, with either half of his name giving TIN
7D: Definition is “Bright light”, dazed is an anagram indicator for NONE, giving NEON
8A: Definition is “Some of a person’s makeup” (we are ~18% carbon!), and CARBON is found inside CAR BONnet
8A: Each of the clues are ELEMENTS on the PERIODIC table! only “elements” was the original answer, but i realised “periodic” was the same length, so why not add it as an alternative!
    thanks for playing :)

As someone who has just been casually solving cryptic clues on Reddit and Minute Cryptic, this was the first 'full' puzzle I've solved. I enjoyed the theme and the difficulty was very rewarding for a beginner. I honestly wish the puzzle was bigger! 10/10.
