A Different Kind Of Golf - April Contest Midi

◆◆ · By theparocine · Published 2024-04-14T13:15:37.506Z

Meta Prompt
Just like a golf course - this puzzle has a hole. A missing something where something should be. Can you find it?
My entry for the April midi contest that I so VERY nearly disqualified myself from by publishing it a little too early for a few minutes. I originally tested this idea in a 15x15 grid - it was hard to squeeze everything in! Also - note that while arguably there are two possible meta solutions, only one of them is actually a word (Though it's pretty easy to get the right solution once you have the other, wrong one).
Hints:
  1. A lot of the words in this puzzle are quite short, aren't they?
  2. Some of them are even spelled really similarly...
  3. What does 26A have to do with the meta? What's the banner image supposed to be? And why is the puzzle named like that?
  4. Maybe there's a kind of golf you can do with words?

Meta solve - 26A, the crossword title, and the banner image (of ladder golf) all refer to word ladders, also known as word links or word golf. You can rearrange every four-letter clue in the crossword to form a single word ladder with one word missing (being 38A 48A 6D 9A 9D 27D 27A 34D 1A 1D ?? 41A 25D 28D 33A 12A 20D 50A 10D 37D). This single word, SHIT (or CHOT, which isn't a word), is the "missing something where something should be".

I hope you've enjoyed doing this! This is the first time I've ever set a meta, and the idea was just to good to give up when I made the golf - word ladder association, especially with a number of them now appearing on this site!

Bahaha! This was fantastic. I am still a novice solver, so while I couldn't work through the entire grid without check/reveal, the hints really helped me solve the meta! You had me jotting down all the words in a notepad trying to figure out how they all link. Well done!
